Love, Sex & Life Blog
I have this memory of when I was a young girl. I had slept over a friends house and was waiting for my mom to pick me up. While I was waiting, my friend showed me this book that her mom had. It had lots of illustrations of female genitalia. I remember thinking about both, how uncomfortable I was, and how curious it made me feel.
I hear similar stories like mine all the time at my practice. Especially from women who are eager to learn more about their own sexuality. I ask them questions like, “who taught you about sexuality?” and “what did you learn about your female anatomy?” A lot of people say, “not much, accept for the reproductive stuff they taught us in health class.”
If you’re someone who wants to begin exploring your own body but don’t know where to start, here are 4 things you can do to get to know your female genitalia. You can also click on this link for a fun diagram.
“The clitoris is pure in purpose. It is the only organ in the body designed purely for pleasure.” – The Vagina Monologues
- LOOK AT AN ANATOMY DRAWING – Find a proper diagram of the vulva and study the parts. Vulva Anatomy
- TAKE A HAND MIRROR AND LOOK AT YOURSELF – Explore yourself with a hand mirror. Find where your anatomy is located
- TOUCH – Start feeling around to see what its like. E.g. Soft, hard, dry, wet, ribbed, etc.
- PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT FEELS GOOD – Notice what feels good and what doesn’t.
So there you go. Now go home and get to know your female genitalia!
